He’s finished, he’s fat, put him on the bench, sell him. Few legends have had as much abuse thrown at them as Esteban Cambiasso the last seasons.  There is a sort of poetic justice in the fact that it was Cuchu and the oh so whistled player Jonathan that turned the game around for the nerazzurri.

For two thirds of the game we saw a stable, secure and confident Inter. A team that walked out on the pitch firmly believing in Mazzarri’s style of play and schemes.  This was an Inter we haven’t even been able to imagine the last two seasons, the players know what to do on the pitch and they have the confidence to do it. It’s not tiqui taca but it is oh so disciplined. And beautiful to behold, eleven players that know exactly what to do in every situation. These are things that last year were nothing but a distant mirage, are now reality. I actually don’t get a heart attack every time the opponents come close to the Inter defensive line.

The most blatant example of what Mazzarri has achieved is seen in Ricky Alvarez who is improving steadily. The player that has had a tough time convincing the San Siro crowd is now a fan favorite. He dribbles past defenders with laughable ease and works like a possessed man in defense. Alvarez never let the pressure from the stands get to him, he just continued working silently. I wish that Guarin would follow his example, gesturing towards the fans when being subbed is not the way to go.

But let’s return to the game. It was obvious that Montella had done his homework; his team targeted the Inter defensive weak link consistently through the game. That weak link is spelled Juan Jesus. Joaquin attacked Jesus relentlessly and was awarded with a penalty in the second half (scored by Giuseppe Rossi). The first time this season Inter was down by a goal, and the team started looking shaky. Nervous and agitated, focus on refereeing calls and for a short while it started looking like the old Inter. But then he stepped up to the plate, the brilliant “old” player in midfield. Cambiasso equalized with an acrobatic number and continued his impressive passing throughout the game, dictating the movements of the midfield. When the Viola created chances san Samir was there as always and Mazzarri’s band were not settling for the draw.

This opened for the most unbelievable hero of the game, the meme-king and summer fan favorite Jonathan scored the winner after an assist by Alvarez and the circle is closed. The comeback of the jeered. The legend that was finished, the defender that wasn’t Maicon and the young Argentinian that was hyped as the new Kaká turn the game around for Inter. Fiorentina was just a few refereeing calls from the CL-spot last season, Inter finished ninth. The cliché that has been repeated all summer since he signed, is correct so far. Mazzarri is the best signing of this team.
