Inter-Fiorentina serie A

Mateo Kovacic has won over Inter. It took some time to convince Mazzarri but the coach now seems to want to reward the progress of the Croatian gem.  Against Napoli he proved his class and it is now clear to Walter Mazzarri after the 0-0 draw at the San Siro because “the time was right”. Speaking of time, it is seven days until the derby against Milan, which no Interista would miss. Mateo, still without a goal, has placed the Rossoneri in his sights: “I like to play games that come with pressure. A goal? Once you get one it all becomes easier.”

Easy, unlike the start of his second season in Milan. Before his chance came in Genoa against Sampdoria, Kovacic had only managed twenty-six appearances; eight from the start and only in four of these games did he play the full 90 minutes. There was little space provided by Mazzarri due to Kovacic’s lack of effectiveness in defense. Then his chance came at the Marassi, followed by Parma at the Tadini and finally against Napoli in front of a home crowd at the San Siro. Kovacic received applause and praise and Mazzarri referred to him as a “future champion”.

The progress of Kovacic this season is due to a variety of factors, which he has worked on and will continue to work on at Pinetina with Mazzarri. First and foremost was his ability to contribute when Inter are not in possession of the ball. The Croatian has worked on his technical and tactical fundamentals and the results are visible on the field. Moreover, Kovacic has great courage in attack and this was obvious on the field against Napoli. Mazzarri commented on his fine match: “He has become useful in the defensive parts of the game and has improves his shooting.” Kovacic was the heart of the Nerazurri and acted as a reference point, which opened up space for his teammates in the middle of the pitch. The only thing missing is goals but they will come. Next Sunday is the test and Mateo is ready.
