In Naples it is denied, in Milan it is not confirmed. Yet the rumours of a summer wedding between Marek Hamsik and Inter cannot be categorized as merely speculation. The Slovak has not been as satisfied at Napoli since the arrival of Benitez. He has gone from the undisputed leader within the team after the departures of both Cavani and Lavezzi, to one of many, often watching his teammates from the bench. The story that began when Mazzarri arrived in Napoli has seemingly ended and it is normal that the midfielder would evaluate his options, if the situation were to persist.

It is normal that the Nerazzurri seem close to Hamsik, given the presence of Mazzarri on the bench and the connection born when Moratti decided not to push for Hamsik, allowing Naples to collect the signature of the former Brescia man. De Laurentiis’s made a promise to Moratti that the Nerazzurri would be the first call if the Slovak were to leave Naples. Moreover, Inter’s new President, Erick Thohir, has a serious ambition to build a competitive team, while also wanting to fulfill the needs of his coach, who would certainly like to work with Hamsik again.

It is certainly an exciting idea but there is nothing concrete about this rumour at the moment. Although, there is a small detail that makes you wonder if there is actually something to it. After the game against Napoli last week, when asked the question directly, Hamsik said he knew nothing about a potential transfer to Milan. This was a predictable reply. However, his half smile when answering has created some doubt and has raised some curiosity. It was as if he was saying: I can’t really talk about it but I would do it. At this point can we say with any certainty that Hamsik will arrive at Inter? We cannot.

The 30m valuation by De Laurentiis is still far too much, however, this assessment is also inflated when considering the current season that the Slovak has had at Napoli. In addition, Inter already have too many midfielders in their squad and must first sell before buying, which will certainly not be easy given how this has gone in previous mercato seasons. Simply put, without cash on hand this deal is not possible. Finally we have to remember that Hernanes arrived in January and the there is a desire to build around Kovacic for the future. Adding Hamsik would mean that there would be another player with similar characteristics occupying a similar position on the pitch.

It is natural for Interisti to dream of a midfield containing Hernanes, Hamsik and Kovacic, but you need to look at the deal from all angles. More than another similarly styled midfielder, Inter need to add a degree of hardiness and someone who can help protect against the counter-attack. At this point Inter already have more midfielders than spots on the field with both Guarin and Alvarez, although both may depart this summer. Adding the Slovakian to the list would create some competition and would provide Inter with a dangerous midfield, which in turn would be capable or rotating without losing quality, but Inter would also have to sit one of them. The ups and downs in form will probably allow space for everyone but it is something Inter will need to think about.

It is clear that the Inter leadership is already at work for next season, given the willingness to conclude their market dealings early enough to give Mazzarri complete roster from the start next season. At this time Hamsik is largely a rumour and the team has more urgent needs in other positions that need to be reinforced. Both Thohir and the coach are aware of this, although nothing should be excluded in the mercato, including this potential purchase.
