Marco van Basten has spoken out in defence of his compatriot Frank De Boer, who has received widespread criticism in the midst of an indifferent start to the season.

The ex-Milan striker, who will soon take up his role as FIFA technical director, has spoken about the former Ajax coach with Corriere della Sera: “He arrived a few days before the start of the season and has not had enough time to convey his ideas. It is not easy to come from another country, without even knowing the language.”

Van Basten is confident that De Boer has the requisite skills to bring Inter back to the top: “He needs to become familiar with his new environment, but will do well given time.”
