Inter coach Luciano Spalletti spoke with RAI Sport after the hardfought win at home at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milano’s San Siro district against Genoa.

Interesting game, some positive things but it took a lot of effort…

“This was the same as in the win against SPAL, we struggled and if our opposition plays well then fatigue starts to set in, even in the games where you deserve to win, nobody will just let you take it, It was a simple game in the tactics but we failed to find the spaces and risked defeat but we kept some balance. We must improve our quality in the final third. We have won against a tough team with great physicality and athleticism, sometimes we need not press enough but there were chances and in the end we were rewarded.”

Icardi recovered the ball well but he has to play in attack and in this regard he did not perform to standard…

“We have to look for him and must practise his technique more, from outside the box the team tried a lot. His team mates believe in his qualities and inside the box he is a ferocious animal so when you find him, you can trust he will make something out of it. Seeing a player like him go to recover that ball on the couter-attack for us is worth double. He is credited for doing something with no personal merit but it helps the team as a whole and so this is a sign of growth in the group.”

Eder’s changes seem to be really important..

“He raised the tempo and became the focal point of our play, Handanovic also intervened after a defensive error in the last 5 metres. In my opinion we are on the right track, we have to be faster and more productive with our advances.”

Three or four players have played trequartista but have you thought about putting Candreva in the Nainggolan role?

“Yes, but also Perisic. The three men behind the striker must stay within line. By all playing through the middle you crush the structure of the team, you must search for the right ball because all teams play in front of the ball now, but you have to be quick or you will lose your chance.”
