The Italian Football Association (FIGC) president Carlo Tavecchio was interviewed during the “La Politica Nel Pallone” show on the GR Parlamento channel. He reiterated his intentions to move quickly on his plans to reform the professional game in Italy.

“At the start of the new year we will open a discussion & I hope that we can arrive at a reasonable solution in the next 3-4 years. It is unavoidable that the professional leagues be reduced, I refer to Serie A, Serie B & more so Serie C. We could pass from the existing 102 teams down to around 70.” Tavecchio also went on to talk about the gap between the small clubs & the big clubs: “It’s a problem that not only affects us in Italy but also most of Europe too. To reduce the number of teams would allow important savings to be made by clubs, but until the decision is in the hands of interested parties it will be difficult to complete the transition. These are the facts, there’s willingness from some to make the change but the lower placed teams will never agree to the demands of the bigger teams to reduce the size of the league, there has to be a majority decision.”

Carlo Tavecchio finished on the current Serie A season. He doesn’t seem to think that it will be all about Juventus & Napoli this year “I think it’s going to be interesting, I don’t believe that it will be just a two horse race between Juventus & Napoli. I think there will be chances for the other big teams this year too, which can only be a good advert for our game across the world. We have only got started & all is yet to be decided.”
