During SportMediaSet’s segment  ‘4-4-2’, Inter’s legendary former goalkeeper Walter Zenga spoke about the derby.

The merits of Spalletti and the sins of Montella?

“Milan has changed, it is unclear why, putting together a new team is not an easy task, it takes time and more games in the Europa League. Inter played only one game a week. In the derby  they had a goalkeeper who defended at the decisive moments and a striker who made three goals from four shots. And when the goalkeeper and attacker play like this it becomes difficult to beat them.”

Are three central defenders to few?

“Considering that there are no European competitions I would say no. With only one game a week it is useless to have a 28-player squad. I think without the cups no coach will ask for a large squad.”

Was Milan’s defensive phase the coach’s fault?

“Montella’s changes have changed Milan’s appearance even if he weakened the game’s construction phase. He took off Biglia’s cover because he had to reassemble. I thought that with the players who he had the 4-3-3 was the most appropriate formation, but it’s just my reflection, I do not want to judge the work of another coach in the Serie A.”

The impression is, however, that the three defenders are struggling. Montella said he saw improvements…

“I do not know, I did not follow Milan much before the derby and against Sampdoria.” In Genoa they played really badly, but the coach always sees the team, we do not associate the problems of the day, I can only imagine it is difficult assembling a team with all these new players.”

Does Zenga think the right coach for Inter is Spalletti?

“Paradoxically, he found himself in the simplest situation because last year Inter came seventh after an acute season, so even if he had to get sixth, he would do better. He did not have the cups, he could set the preparation as he wanted and training a narrow squad: Spalletti is a great trainer and has all these advantages.”

Is Handanovic the best goalkeeper in the Serie A?

“He is the best goalkeeper for Inter.  Yesterday he made two very difficult saves in two key moments of the match.”
