Inter legend, Giuseppe Bergomi spoke to Tutti Convocati after Italy’s World Cup dreams were crushed by a 0-0 draw in the 2nd playoff leg at home against Sweden last night.

“We need to reform from the bottom, even at the youth level, but I wonder, are we still a world football power? I think Jose Mourinho is the right one, we need to get to a great technical commissioner and also an interim manager. Then when I say provoking Mourinho, he would want one like Mancini, in short, an important trainer who also trains the club. ”

Both of the suggested managers, Jose Mourinho and Roberto Mancini have never managed an international team, however both have found much success managing clubs. Both managers have won Serie A with Inter and also the Premier League. Mourinho currently coaches English side, Manchester United. The former Italian striker, Mancini is currently coaching in Russia with Zenit St. Petersburg.

Italian football barely needs a reform. The signal was repeatedly there when Italy failed in Euro 2008, WC2010 and WC2014. But the national team has not reformed for almost a decade, so Italy has just paid the price by missing the WC2018. Current national team is still a shadow of champions of WC2006. Yes, we had some youngsters, but they are not trained and prepared to compete in WC level both in terms of physical development and mental strength. Poor Azzurri. Better to start the reform process from this scratch as soon as possible.
