Former Inter midfielder Nicola Berti spoke on the Italian national teams failure to qualify for the World Cup in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport earlier today.

The 50-year-old earned 39 caps for the Azzurri during his playing career with all caps coming during his 10 year spell at the Nerazzurri.

“Perhaps poor is a big word but certainly not when we have always gone to the World Cup. There is much to be done. With that being said, you risk becoming scarce if you do not exploit the few qualities that you have available to you. A bit of Lorenzo Insigne could help and given the great form Stephan El Shaarawy has been in recently he should have been brought in sooner.”

The goalless draw at the San Siro on Monday night with Sweden meant the Azzurri will miss the World Cup in Russia next year and will miss their first World Cup for some 58 years.
