Borussia Monchengladbach legend Ranier Bonhof spoke with T-Online.de on his playing career as a whole. Bonhof recalled one of his fondest moments, a 7-1 win over Inter in the European Cup, the predecessor to the Champions League.

“The game we won 7-1 in against Inter. We were outsiders, even UEFA did not know our team,” he said.

However, the result never stood due to Inter striker Roberto Boninsegna being hit by a tin can from a German fan. UEFA allowed the teams to play the second leg which Inter won 4-2 and then they replayed the first leg which ended 0-0 which in turn eliminated ‘Gladbach from the competition.

Bonhof added, “Unfortunately, that result was then erased and completely eliminated by the statistics, but fortunately the media continue to remember it.”

Inter made the final of that years European Cup having dispatched Standard Liege and Celtic after ‘Gladbach but were unable to beat Ajax who ran out 2-0 winners at Feyenoord’s De Kuip stadium.
