It looks like Gabigol’s time in European football may be coming to end. It seems that Gabriel Barbosa is looking to return home to Brazil in an attempt to re-find his form & maybe even a place in the National team in time for the World Cup in Russia next summer with a run of good form.

According to FCInterNews the Benfica players’ preference would be to return to the club where he made his name, Santos, but it is thought that he is willing to return to any Brasiliero side in order to get the playing time he craves. It is thought that the young brazilian has had enough of european football where he has failed to make an impression last year at Inter nor this season so far at Benfica. With the high price of his wages a cause for concern, it would seem that there are no interested parties in Europe so Gabigol has decided to return home in January. Santos would welcome him back with open arms but the issue of his wages may prove a stumbling block with them being way over the current budget of the Brazilian team but the Inter owned player has been reported to be willing to cut his wages in order to make the move happen. Inter could be willing to accommodate the players wishes in a bid to free up one of the 2 non EU player slots permitted in a Serie A squad.

In Brazil the chance to sign Gabigol is being seen mainly as a great opportunity. He would improve any squad & is still regarded by many there as top talent. It comes as no surprise that he is also being linked with Flamengo, Cruzeiro & San Paolo. Santos remains the first choice but a lot depends on the pending presidential elections at the club on the 9th December. Modesto Roma Junior, the current president who is favourite to win the election, has always expressed his admiration for the Benfica forward & would be keen to bring him back.

As mentioned before the main stumbling block will be his high wages currently being earned in Europe. So the situation remains the same. An unhappy Gabigol. No interested parties in Europe. Time to head back home to Brazil.
