During the draw for next year’s World Cup in Russia, Javier Zanetti got the question about Mauro Icardi playing for Argentina next year from former Argentinian head coach Alfio Basile and responded in the following way through Skype: “He has more than proven himself. He has scored more than 20 goals per season for quite some time now, and he more than deserves the call for the World Cup”. Then he continued to talk about Argentinas chances in the World Cup: “With all the quality players that Argentina have there should be no problems advancing to the second round. The most important thing is to get a good start”. There has been a lot of talks about Icardi not being called up to the Argentinian national team. Some rumours have suggested that Lionel Messi is behind Icardi not getting the call, something that has been denied by the Barcelona attacker and his posse.
