The future of Inter captain Mauro Icardi continues to be one of the hottest topics of debate in football, and it seems the Milanese giants are ready to intervene. According to Corriere dello Sport, the Nerazzurri have no intention of losing him and will look to begin talks over a new contract once this month’s transfer window closes.

The club intends to change the €110 million release clause in his current deal, given how low that figure seems in comparison to some of the fees clubs are paying nowadays. They know they must protect themselves from the advances of Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who is determined to make some significant additions to his squad this summer.

Next month, Inter will begin talks with Icardi’s wife and agent Wanda Nara, and are in a hurry to increase his current €5 million salary to €7.5 million. His release clause will either be removed or doubled. The club recognise the fact that, despite Icardi’s willingness to stay, failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League again could result in him changing his mind.
