Yuto Nagatomo has revealed his reasoning behind joining Galatasaray on loan among other topics in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport today.

“There was competition for places and unfortunately there was no certainty for me that I would start games. I thought about it and in the end we decided [I should go out on loan]. I could not afford not to go to the World Cup. The World Cup is a competition I really care about.”

The Japanese defender then spoke about what he thinks may happen once his loan spell in Turkey comes to an end.

“Now it’s too early to say, now I want to win the Turkish title, then I’ll think of Russia. I have Inter in my heart, I’m a fan and I would not have any problem with staying.”

He proceeded to discuss Inter’s Champions League goal and attempted to try explain what he think went wrong after the half way point this season.

“It will not be easy because the opponents are strong and do not give up but Inter can and must do it. Getting in to Europe is fundamental.

“It happened with Mancini in 2015 too. I think it’s complicated to answer this question, football is strange.”

Nagatomo concluded the interview by speaking on Inter manager Luciano Spalletti and his recent comments about Inter lacking quality.

“With him there have never been problems, we are talking about a great coach, he is very strong. What he said was probably an attempt to stimulate the environment and the players, but Inter is strong and there are the necessary means to reach the Champions League, I have total confidence in my team-mates.”
