Gazzetta dello Sport have compared current Inter full back Joao Cancelo to Maicon, who starred at full back during his spell with the club.

“The comparison with the Brazilian who was part of the treble winning Inter team may seem exaggerated but from a technical, physical strength, speed and personality aspect, Cancelo has little to be jealous of.”

After injury disrupted him soon after his arrival, Cancelo was then used sparingly but from February onwards he has exploded and turned in to an integral part of Luciano Spalletti’s Inter side.

It still remains to be seen whether or not Inter will turn the Portuguese’s stay in Milano in to a permanent one amid an ongoing battle with financial fair play problems that have plagued the club for a number of years now. Cancelo has a €35 million redemption option in his loan contract but without a major sale or a new agreement being reached with Valencia, redeeming him could prove a near impossible task no matter how much Inter want to keep a hold of him. Gazzetta further report however that his future may perhaps depend on Champions League qualification where Inter would use their qualification prize money toward redeeming him.
