Inter legend Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi has admitted that if it was up to him, he would not take up the option to redeem Joao Cancelo in an interview with Sky Sport.

The Portuguese full back joined Inter in the summer on loan from Valencia with a €35 million redemption option attached and has made 23 appearances for Inter thus far.

“Cancelo? I would not exercise the option to buy him. He is a good full-back, but that amount could be better spent on other players,” he explained.

In recent weeks Cancelo has been compared to Maicon but Bergomi is not convinced by the comparisons.

“He was compared to Maicon, but Maicon’s Inter relied on him for his running, physicality, involvement and character: he was a pillar.

“Cancelo is still sloppy when defending one-on-one, plus he’s too risky with his play. I am not saying he is not a good player, but I would not keep him.”
