A return to the goal scorers list was not the only good news this week for Mauro Icardi, as his performance may have reignited his chances of going to the World Cup.

According to TyC Sports in Argentina, Albiceleste coach Jorge Sampaoli will take a tour of Europe in the following weeks to cast his eye over a number of players and begin finalising his squad to take to Russia. Given the physical problems of Sergio Aguero (who injured his knee playing against Manchester United) and the underwhelming performance of Lautaro Martinez in last month’s friendlies, Sampaoli may devote some of his time in the continent to Icardi.

For his part, the Argentinian striker has done everything in his power to push for selection. His goal against Cagliari was his 25th of the season – breaking his previous best of 24 with another five games to spare. The forward will hope that his tally continues to rise as Inter fight for a spot in next seasons Champions League.
