Former Inter midfielder Luis Figo believes Mauro Icardi is good enough to play for Real Madrid should they come calling for him in the summer.

Icardi has been frequently linked with a move to the Spanish giants over the past few months, with Los Blancos thought to be seeking a replacement for current centre-forward Karim Benzema.

Some have expressed doubts over whether the Argentine would be the right option to replace the Frenchman, but Figo, who spent five years in Madrid before moving to Inter in the summer of 2005, believes he would be ready to make the step up.

“The top players like him are capable of adapting to whatever situation they find themselves in,” he told Sky Sport on Friday. “They have the qualities to play in any team.

“His future will depend on the project Inter have going forward and the club’s financial condition, as well as the will of the player himself.”

Figo also discussed Inter’s race to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, underlining the importance of making a return to Europe’s top club competition.

“It’s fundamental that Inter return to the Champions League”, he said, “because they’ve been out of it for too long and it’s not positive.”

The Nerazzurri will continue their pursuit of a top four finish this weekend when they face Chievo at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi on Sunday.
