Former Inter President Massimo Moratti believes Inter are capable of defeating Juventus in Saturday’s Derby d’Italia.

This weekend’s clash at San Siro promises to be the most important meeting between the two sides in recent memory, with the Scudetto and Champions League qualification both on the line, but Moratti is confident that the match has arrived at the right moment for Luciano Spalletti’s side.

“I think Inter are in a good condition at the moment,” he told Corriere dello Sport, “despite the fact they haven’t always picked up the results of late. They’ve proven it over the last few weeks.

“Juventus remain a great team [despite Sunday’s defeat to Napoli] even though they only have a one-point lead at the top now. You have to be determined and concentrated when you face them.

“With Juventus one point ahead of Napoli and Inter one point behind Roma and Lazio, three points on Saturday would mean a great deal for the two sides. This is a huge game for both of them.

“Would the road to the top four be downhill for Inter if they won? I don’t think so, but if they were to beat Juve then Champions League qualification would certainly be easier for them.

“I trust Spalletti because he’s a great coach and I hope he demonstrates it again here. I’m convinced the players are aware both how important the objective they’re pursuing is and how Inter fans feel about matches against Juventus…”
