Inter suffered a lot against Juventus in the Derby d’Italia, after having staged a comeback and almost getting away with an incredible win before Juventus killed off Inter’s dreams of a Champions League spot during the final minutes of the game. This is what Inter coach Luciano Spalletti had to say about the game when he talked to Premium Sport.

Are you satisfied with the performance of referee Orsato tonight?

“It is difficult for me to judge, because I am not in a position to evaluate. I think there were more decisions in favor of Juventus but it all depends of what he saw.”

Where did Inter go wrong?

“We lost tonight because being outnumbered means that you lose a lot of energy, then their 2-2 goal was a bit fortunate. The team deserved a better result.”

Why did you sub Icardi off?

“There were different signs of fatigue, and when he told me that his problems came back I had to manage the team and our defensive phase in order to maintain a certain structure for set pieces. With Santon on the pitch I thought the team would be more able to push up.”

Knowing the result of all episodes, where do you start? What are you going to tell the team?

“That is the easiest thing, because the team had a great game and that is what I will tell them. Of course we have to get rid of this bitterness, this was an undeserved loss.”

Did you tell the team to start off higher on the pitch?

“When you talk about these things, the defensive line becomes the most important part of the team. They had three guys in attack and we were one guy short due to the sending off. Then it becomes difficult whether to push up with the full backs or to go full back against full back against their central defense. But what matters is to try to stay up in the pitch and have a more compact team, thereby risking a defensive ball.”

What do you say to Icardi?

“That this game should have ended in a different way. It is tough because the players invest emotionally in their job and their work come from the will to satisfy the fans.”
