Former Inter player, legendary treble winning captain and now Vice President, Javier Zanetti, spoke to Italian TV station Mediaset live from the Red Square in Moscow today. He spoke about the World Cup which started in Russia today and the exclusion of current Inter captain and fellow Argentine, Mauro Icardi from the Argentina national team squad.

The Argentine said: “Mauro deserved to be at the World Cup, beyond everything he has done for Inter during these years. He scored more than twenty goals a season in recent years, then he made himself ready for the national team when called upon: he deserved a chance, even if not as first choice. He has been left feeling bad about it as he hoped right until the very end that he would get a chance.”

When quizzed about the reasons why he felt Icardi had been left out, Zanetti replied: “In Argentina they are talking about non football related reasons but I can’t believe that. I would like to believe that Sampaoli made a purely technical decision favouring Higuain and Aguero.”

Argentina kick off their World Cup against Iceland on Saturday 16th June in Moscow.
