Fabio Capello has revealed that he was close to joining Inter on ‘four or five occasions’ during his managerial career, but says last-minute hitches meant he never agreed a deal to join the club.

Capello announced his retirement in April after leaving Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning by mutual consent and discussed his decision in a long interview with Corriere dello Sport on Tuesday, as well as touching upon some of the criticism he received during his time at Real Madrid (‘all this talk of philosophies makes me laugh; numbers are all that matter in football, everything else is hot air.’)

However he was also asked about the occasions on which he had been linked with a move to Inter, who were reported to have considered him as a replacement for Frank de Boer after dismissing the Dutchman in November 2016.

“I was close to joining Inter four or five times,” he said. “But we never agreed a deal. Maybe because… well, never mind, let’s move on.

“Let’s just say that on one occasion they would back out at the last minute and then on the next occasion it would be me who backed out.”
