Former Milan striker Marco Van Basten had likened the Milan teams of the 1980s and 1990s to the Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid teams of today.

The Dutchman, who is widely regarded as one of the best strikers ever, spent eight years with Milan between 1987 and 1995, first discussed the differences between the Milan side’s he was a part of and the current Milan squad.

“Things have changed a lot. My Milan was almost entirely Italian aside from us three from the Netherlands and we were a very strong team with Silvio Berlusconi owning the club. Now the owner is Chinese and I do not even know him,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Milan has dropped off a lot and there is the risk of staying out of the cups and that hurts me, considering ourselves and Inter were the Real and Atletico Madrid of today.  we dominated and won the Champions League while Inter did nice things in the UEFA Cup.”
