Hector Herrara could be the next player Inter signs on a free transfer. The captain of the Mexican national team has decided not to renew his contract with Porto, so from January, he’ll be able to sign with any club of his choice.

Inter Sporting Director Piero Ausilio has been following him for some time and might want to take this last chance to bring him to Milano. Turin based newspaper Tuttosport reports that: “Inter will try to sign a midfielder in January, but in Herrera’s case it might just be preparation for his arrival in the Summer, due to the fact that the Nerazzurri have used all of their non-EU spots with Lautaro and Keita.”

Nevertheless, Ausilio has started working on the player, with the aim of persuading him to join, over big European competitors, such as Tottenham. Porto already refused Inter this summer, hoping to force someone into paying his €40 million release clause. It’s still unknown if Porto will definitely sell Herrara in January, but Inter will be preparing for the Summer.

The prospect of bringing in an experienced international and mature player  who turns 29 on April 19th is something that attracts Inter. However, the Mexican will no doubt be after his last big contract, which Inter are only prepared to meet, if they secure him on a free signing with exception of agent fees.

Although, the result of the Champions League group will also decide whether or not Inter bring in a midfielder in January, but it would obviously have to be done with a loan, which cannot be done with Herrara since he is in the final season of his contract.

Rafinha is of course the ideal target ever since Inter – with Spalletti’s blessing – let him return to Barca, in order to bring in Lautaro and focus on meeting UEFA’s Financial Fair Play demands, but he has not been forgotten. Inter will monitor players within big European clubs who are not getting much game time, like Rafinha, in an attempt to fill the gaps in the squad.
