Former Inter boss Giovanni Trapattoni has backed Mauro Icardi to be decisive in this evening’s Derby della Madonnina and believes both Inter and Milan are getting back to where they should be.

Trapattoni took part in 33 derbies as a player and as a coach, recording 12 victories, 11 draws and 10 defeats, and agrees with Luciano Spalletti’s claim that these two matches are worth an entire season on their own.

“I agree with Spalletti because of the weight of history behind this match, but also due to the tension and expectation which divides an entire city during the build-up.

“Icardi could well be a key figure this evening, not just for his pure ability but because of his goal-scoring knack.

“I have fond memories of two derbies in particular: a 1-1 draw in 1963, when Mazzola scored for Inter and then I equalised, and then the 1-0 win as Inter coach in 1988 when Aldo Serena scored the winner.

“Milan and Inter seem to me to be getting back to a high level, so tonight’s derby will be a match between two sides on the right track.”
