Inter are considering offering Samir Handanovic a one-year contract extension which would keep the Slovenian at the club until 2022, according to Tuttosport.

Handanovic has made more than 250 appearances for the Nerazzurri in Serie A since joining in 2012, replacing Mauro Icardi as captain after the Argentine was stripped of the armband in February.

Inter are under no pressure to renew the goalkeeper’s contract, which expires in 2021, but could offer him an extra season as a sign of recognition for how he has honoured the armband in the last two months.

“Handanovic has had to assume various extra responsibilities since becoming captain and he has not backed away from any of them,” Tuttosport wrote.

“He has demonstrated the same level of professionalism in the role as he always has both in training and on the pitch.”

Reports last week suggested Inter could appoint Milan Skriniar as the club’s new captain next season, having agreed to extend his contract until 2023, however Handanovic may keep the armband if he is deemed to have earned it.
