Cagliari have made a last-ditch attempt to keep Nicolò Barella by offering to double the player’s wages, according to L’Unione Sarda.

Rossoblu owner Tommaso Giulini wants €50 million to sell the midfielder but Inter, who appear to be the only club left in the race, have never offered that much.

Barella’s new deal would include a release clause for that exact figure and make him the club’s highest paid player, alongside striker Leonardo Pavoletti.

The paper today reported the 22-year-old had given the green light to a contract extension, although it is widely known Barella wants to sign for Inter this summer.

Roma officially withdrew from the battle to sign Barella yesterday after their sporting director Gianluca Petrachi confirmed he had chosen the Nerazzurri.

Barella impressed at last month’s European Under-21 Championships in Italy, scoring in a 3-1 win over Belgium, as Gigi Di Biagio’s side were eliminated at the group stage.
