UEFA vice president Michele Uva has confirmed that public health will be at the forefront of each and every decision which European football’s governing body make.

Football across the continent is on hold and some leagues have even decided to stop the season entirely due to the global Coronavirus pandemic and Uva has insisted that UEFA are doing what they can to help out during these unprecedented times.

On top of domestic competitions, it remains to be seen what will happen with the Champions League and the Europa League, with both competitions requiring teams to travel between countries, something which is particularly difficult at this time.

“Every decision that will be taken will have the public health as a basic and binding principle,” he remarked in an interview with Milan based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, an interview which appeared in today’s print edition.

“We are particularly pleased to have managed to find a path shared with the 55 federations, with the ECA, the European leagues and the players.

“We are trying to help the federations, leagues and clubs to resume the seasons by inserting the European cups in the middle.

“It’s not our first alternative to play the leagues first and then the cups but the reasoning must take into consideration that the various competitions might resume at different times, depending on the respective governments’ decisions.”

Uva then went on to confirm that clubs can still play possibly play in European cups this season even if their domestic season ends up being stopped.

“If the season is not played due to a government decree, that’s one thing. If there is the possibility to train and play but the season has been suspended, a club can still participate in the cups.”
