Inter Milan are planning to sign a central defender during the upcoming summer transfer window.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper report that a player to reinforce the back three will be among the Nerazzurri’s priorities.

Over the next week or so, Inter will really get their summer transfer plans moving.

The change in ownership from Suning to Oaktree Capital will mean that the club cannot actually make signings during the period of transition. That will last two or three weeks.

But that will not prevent Inter from firming up their plans.

Early this coming week, there will be a transfer summit with Inter’s directors, coach Simone Inzaghi, and representatives of Oaktree.

And that will be the meeting where Inter really define their targets for this summer, definitively.

The Corriere anticipate that one item on the agenda will be confirming the need for a new central defender.

Inter Milan Targeting A Central Defender This Summer

This season, Inter have had five out-and-out central defenders for the three positions in coach Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 formation.

These are Alessandro Bastoni, Stefan de Vrij, Francesco Acerbi, Benjamin Pavard, and Yann Bisseck.

Then, the likes of Matteo Darmian and Carlos Augusto are capable of playing either in the back three or at wingback.

That has been sufficient depth for the current season.

But next campaign promises to put even more strain on the squad depth, with more fixtures.

Therefore, the Corriere report, Inter want to sign another player who is an out-and-out central defender.

This week’s meeting will see the club’s directors and Inzaghi define more clearly the kind of profile they want in the position.

The question then would also be what Inter will be willing to invest in a defender.

The Nerazzurri already intend to invest in moves for goalkeeper Bento and forward Albert Gudmundsson.
