Inter Channel‘s Tommaso Zanotti phoned Javier Zanetti after the captain returned home from his meeting with Pope Benedict XVI this morning.

Captain, it must have been an intense morning for you. What was it like meeting Pope Benedict XVI?

“Yes, it was an intense morning. I’d met him once before when the team was in Rome with Roberto Mancini as our coach. But it was different this time because I had my whole family with me and it really was an emotional experience.”

You gave the Pope a Nerazzurri shirt with the number 16 on the back.

“Yes, now the Pope has a shirt with his name on it and that added to the emotion of the experience.”

Benedict XVI held your youngest child Tomas in his arms. How did that feel?

“That’s what I meant when I said it was a really emotional experience, because Paula and my children were with me. Sharing such a special day with them in the presence of his Holiness was really touching.”

What about seeing the Stadio Meazza packed with nearly 80,000 people?

“San Siro was full and there were loads of youngsters too. I think it was an exciting morning for everyone present.”

What are you going to do over the coming days?

“I’ll have a holiday with my family and then I’ll immediately start thinking about next season.”
