Before Juventus v Inter, there were two teams on winning runs. Now there is one. Conte’s side hadn’t lost in 49 Serie A games, after 32 wins and 17 draws. Their last defeat dated back to 15 May 2011, 0-1 at Parma. Since then, there had been one game – the last – in the 2010/11 season (under Gigi Delneri), all 38 games of the 2011/12 campaign and the first 10 this term. It is still Juventus’ longest ever unbeaten streak in a single national championship and the second best any side has managed since 1929/30, nine games shorter than the record set by Fabio Capello’s AC Milan team of the early nineties.
It’s also the first game the Bianconeri have lost at Juventus Stadium in any competitive fixture, including cup games. Their last defeat in Turin was on 5 March 2011 when AC Milan came away with a 0-1 win. Since then they had gone 33 home games undefeated, with 22 wins and 11 draws. On Saturday Juventus fell apart in second half, which is when, under Conte’s stewardship, they have more often than not come out strong and improved on their half-time scoreline. 1-0 to the Bianconeri at the break, 1-3 to the Nerazzurri at full time.
Andrea Stramaccioni’s Inter keep marching forward, however. That’s now nine wins in as many away matches in 2012/13, including the Europa League. Their last defeat came in the final game of last season, 3-1 away to Lazio. They haven’t won nine consecutive games on the road since Mancini’s reign, in 2006/07. It’s also Inter’s ninth victory on the trot in all games, home and away: the last time they failed to win was on 23 September (0-2 in San Siro against Siena).
Diego Milito was the hero tonight as he racked up his ninth double in Serie A, his seventh in Nerazzurri colours. He has now scored 71 goals in 143 competitive outings for Inter, almost one every two matches.
The Nerazzurri hadn’t beaten Juventus in Turin since 30 January 2008: 2-3 in the Coppa Italia. Inter’s last league victory away to the Bianconeri was on 20 April 2005 (0-1).
Stramaccioni has now managed 14 wins in 20 league games: the same number José Mourinho had after his first 20 games in Serie A.
