Fassone: “Considering the Italian laws, we could have a new arena in 2018”

In an interview with goal.com, Inter’s CEO Marco Fassone talked about the future plans for Inter and began, of course, with the arena project: “It’s an important project for Inter’s future, we are looking for the right location. We have a shortlist of three possible locations in and around Milan. During these months, we are looking at the financial aspects of the stadium and we will try to end this phase and the entire procedure in 2013.”

When, then, can the arena be finished? “Consider that the law in Italy is very strange and don’t allow us to arrive from the original project to the final approval until a few years. A reasonable schedule: to begin construction during 2014/15, with a view to opening in 2018.”

The idea is that the two teams in Milan will have two different buildings: “When you are alone, you have more freedom to adapt the building to suit your own needs. I think the best option is to have one stadium for Inter and one for Milan.”

He also talked about the UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations that increasingly affect Inter’s financial reports: “We don’t know exactly what rules UEFA will adopt. We’re working hard with Financial Fair Play to reduce the losses that our club has had over the recent years. We greatly reduced the amount of wages this year and we are working to comply with these rules within a few years.”

Obviously he commented on Inter’s current season and all injuries: “Unfortunately, this has been a season with many injuries that certainly has affected the results. We want to understand why all these injuries happened this year and consider that the coach, since November, has had a reduced number of players available.”

So Stramaccioni will stay? “It’s not a decision that we will make now, but why not? He’s very young – a long term project with him, I hope.”
