Zanetti: “I had decided even before my injury that I would play one more season”

On August 10, Javier Zanetti turns 40 and the injury he suffered in the match against Palermo, he has already left behind. Pupi is not one to give up, which he confirmed in an interview with Argentine TYC Sports. He is now waiting to return to the pitch to lead the new Inter that is taking shape, still as a beacon and a captain: “I had decided even before my injury that I would play one more season. It’s a serious injury, now I hope to recover as good as possible and to return quickly to playing football, that’s what I like the most. Already at the end of the month, I will join my Inter in New York.”

The Inter captain confirmed that even after the end of his career he intends to be close to his teammates: “I have never been tempted to be a coach, I’d rather have a role as a director, in which I’m always with the team. I hope to do my job, just as I did on the pitch.”

In the U.S., he will meet several new players, one of which is Mauro Icardi. The 20 years old striker who arrived to Inter from Sampdoria after months of courtship: “Now he’s ours. I see a great future for him, he’s a nine in the penalty area with a talent for scoring goals. He is also from Argentina, we must take advantage of his potential.”

The captain also remembered when he was left outside the squad for the 2010 World Cup, but Zanetti is not bitter: “I saw it as a part of the sport. You do everything you can, then it is obvious that the decision is not up to you. The important thing is to remain calm and know that you did everything to get onto the team.”

From negative memories to positive memories and the two favorite coaches he’s had during his career: “Bielsa and Mourinho are two masters. They are above average. They are two winners, very careful with the details. They have clear ideas and I think they are similar.”
