Brehme: “The time at Inter was the best time of my career”

In an interview with hsv.de, the former Inter player Andreas Brehme talked before the game between Hamburg and Inter this afternoon and explained why Serie A is behind the Bundesliga and why he sees HSV as being on the right track.

On his time at Inter: “On reflection I would say that it was the best time of my career. It was my first club abroad, where I learned a new language and mentality. At Inter I played with many world class players with whom I am still in contact today. Inter is a friendly club, which is unusual for a club of their size. I still visit Milan several times per year to watch five or six matches at the San Siro Stadium.”

On the current standing of Serie A: “Sportingly, the Italian league is still in the top four leagues in Europe. I expect the new season to be exciting and I am sure that Inter will be involved at the top again. Sadly the Italian stadia are not up to the standards of those in Germany, so the crowds are small. But many clubs are rebuilding, including Inter. That is why the Italian league will once again be near the top again.”

On the impending game at the Imtech Arena: “Two big teams meet in Hamburg on Saturday. They both have a huge reputation in Europe and both live from that. Sadly, their greatest successes are quite a way in the past. With a squad as strong as Inter’s they are duty bound to play in Europe. That they missed out last season is for me nothing but a slip up. I’m sure they won’t let it happen again.”

On HSV’s ambitions: “HSV also want European football, and that must be their solitary goal, considering the size of their attendances and environment. But other clubs want the same thing. Many Bundesliga clubs want to qualify for the Europa League, which makes things tough for Hamburg. I have my fingers crossed that HSV can get back to where they belong.”

On HSV’s current squad: “It will be interesting to see how they compensate for the loss of Heung Min Son. In Hakan Calhanoglu they have signed a huge talent. A very good player. The fact that HSV are not only looking to big name signings is in my opinion the right way to go about things. It will also be interesting to observe how sporting director Oliver Kreuzer fares long term. The fans deserve success.”
