In an interview with GQ Inter’s new President Erick Thohir talked about his plans for Inter: “I’m sure there’s a lot that can be done with Inter’s brand and history. The management needs to change the way they’re operating: we must draw inspiration from the U.S., where you profit from the sport worldwide. You need to focus on an innovative way of doing business. When I bought Indonesian television there were stronger competitors, but we ‘ve tried new ways and today we are the best.”

It’s easy to make comparisons between Thohir and other rich owners, but the president makes clear: “In football, there are two solutions: you’re either like Roman Abramovich and choose a club with a brand that has not yet reached the top and throw in large sums of money, or you’re a manager like me who takes over an honorable club that is already known around the world which needs to bring order to the economy. Inter is the team I followed as a kid and it’s a nice feeling. Italy is an amazing country and its charm is unchanged. Moratti? I told him that he is irreplaceable. I chose a club that is a bit ‘pazza,’ I know. But the opportunities to increase revenue are there.”

Thohir also analyzed the current period with three drawn results in a row which has made the fans ask for Cristiano Ronaldo: “The fans have the right to dream and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to win. The ownership has the right to be the ownership so it requires patience. It ‘s not like Moratti will come to you and say ‘Be my partner ‘. They are Moratti, it’s they who control the references. A little confidence is needed.”

Thohir also confirmed that the idea of investing in Inter came from Pirelli: “They convinced me, they’re building a factory in Jakarta and they told me about this opportunity.”
