Hernanes 01

Gazzetta dello Sport this morning looks at the three key points we can take away from Hernanes’ Inter debut on Sunday night. Firstly there is much to like but the fact that the goal came from a corner after the problems against Catania was pleasing. Even Mazzarri noted it after the game, pointing out that of the 14 set pieces Inter won against the Sicilians they had caused zero moments of danger. We wait to see the Brazilians efforts from a free-kick within shooting range but his blast on goal in the 20th minute shows that distance shooting is in his DNA. The article then discusses areas that we could see an improvement from the midfielder in future games.

During upcoming training sessions familiarity with his team mates will increase. Sunday’s performance was based on just a solitary week of work. Over the coming weeks and months we should see him learn the requirements tactically as requested by Mazzarri. In terms of fitness he is not at 100%, the levels of intensity were not there for the full 90 minutes. He and Inter’s athletic staff have already initiated work on this. Finally there is the matter of where coach Walter Mazzarri uses Hernanes on the pitch, the role of left central midfielder is preferred by the player as by his own admission that he likes to help in defence and can then initiate attacks. Mazzarri could decide however to use him as trequartista in a 3-4-1-2 or high up the pitch in a 3-4-2-1. For now the latter two look unlikely as the team searches for Balance and continuity with Hernanes in his current role.
