He was recently appointed technical director of Inter by President Erick Thohir and Piero Ausilio talked about that and more when he was interviewed by Ivan Zazzaroni and Fabio Caressa at Deejay Football Club:
“If I feel lonely without Marco Branca? No, it’s fine… You’re talking about a person who has given me a lot, a friend of mine. But working alone is not a problem for me. He has won lots with Inter and if I win as much as he it would be great.”
But what does Thohir want from Ausilio?
“He knows that it takes time to do the right things, without deceiving people. I believe that the marked way is the right one and we have a coach that has the right sense of responsibility to be entrusted with this project. In January, a few major purchases arrived and in June, we will continue, always with intelligence.”
On the rumors about Javier Zanetti and a hypothetical move to Chelsea Ausilio responded:
“I spoke with Pupi about it yesterday, there is a relationship of appreciation with Mourinho but he wants to continue at Inter. Along with Thohir we will now find a solution that is best for Inter and for us.”
Ausilio also talked about some decisions on the transfer market, like the arrival of Ishak Belfodil, who according to many people is overrated, and the abandoned deal Vucinic – Guarin:
“The second is something that hasn’t been done, there are probably things that lead you to believe that this it isn’t so. Then there was a meeting with Juventus, it is useless to deny that, and then the thought of having Hernanes in midfield and a reinforcement in the attack was an idea to develop. But then nothing was done, and this apart from the pressure from the fans. It was also due to the fact that no agreement on the financial questions was reached and that is important. Now, however, we are happy to have Fredy and they are happy to have Vucinic. Belfodil is a young player, he came to replace Antonio Cassano, who had a very high salary. We didn’t spend 10 million, that is false: I would say not more than 6 million, then we saved on Antonio’s salary so it was a deal that cost almost 0.”
How many of the players with expiring contracts will remain in Inter?
“Thohir was clear, we will postpone any decision until the end of the season. The focus is to lower the average age with the right mix of young and experienced. For a Vidic to come in, we need to make corresponding changes. Casemiro? I know him well; he has had his ups and downs, he seemed to be a talent but has lost some. A good player, but it is too early to make these assessments.”
Did Ausilio get the post of technical director because it was cheap?
“That’s a lie.”
On Mateo Kovacic and his true position:
“He’s a kid, in Italy the players born in 94 are still playing in the Primavera. He is 19 years old, will play in the World Cup, he has played good matches in Inter and has time to grow. For me he is a mezzala.”
