Cambiasso presented at Leicester: “I’m happy for my past but I need to look forward”

Nigel Pearson’s most recent summer signing gave his first press conference as a City player at King Power Stadium on Friday ahead of the Foxes’ second home game of the season on Sunday against Arsenal. The former Inter Milan superstar, 34, admitted his main reason for joining the Foxes was the Club’s persistence to capture the Argentine’s signature. And having often discussed England’s top flight league with the likes of fellow countryman Hernan Crespo, it was an easy decision to make for the world-renowned central midfielder.

Cambiasso said: “I don’t know how to begin – the coach (Nigel Pearson) and all the Club had an idea – for them the first option was Cambiasso, the second option was Cambiasso and the third option was Cambiasso. When I knew this I called my agent and I said we should go there. In the past I had great possibilities because I played in my country in the Argentine league and in Spain and Italy. I think for my future I need to play in the Premier League and this is a great possibility. I’m very, very happy – it’s the beginning of [my] history in the Premier League – I hope and we hope that in the future it’s a great history.”

The Champions League winner reflected upon his time at the San Siro but insisted that he is focused on his future after signing a one year contract with the Club. And Cambiasso needed no convincing from former manager Roberto Mancini, having worked with the former Fox during his long, illustrious career with the Italian giants.

He continued: “It was a great experience [at Inter] – it’s impossible for me to think another situation will be the same as Inter – for years we won it all. I’m happy for my past but I need to look forward. The past now is not important – I’ve chosen Leicester – I hope the fans and the Club are happy for me. I don’t need to speak [to anyone] to choose [to join Leicester]. It’s my decision. I always spoke about the Premier League with my team mates. I always spoke a lot with Hernan Crespo because I stayed with him at Inter. I haven’t spoken to Roberto [Mancini], I don’t need to speak to Roberto because I’ve chosen for me. I spoke with my wife and my family but it’s my decision.”

Asked whether he would have preferred to sign a longer-term deal than the one-year contract he agreed, Cambiasso said he was content with the offer City had made him, as he looks to settle into his first experience of English football.

“With my one-year contract it’s better to walk and not run – I’m happy and I think the Club is happy. If all is OK then it’s no problem in the future. At this moment I think it’s better (to sign for one year). If all are happy, maybe I can stay more years.”
