Walter Mazzarri stated after Wednesday night’s victory against Atalanta “I’m already focussed on Cagliari” and this determination and attention to detail is what the ex Napoli tactician hopes will avoid a repeat of last season. If the Nerazzurri take three points from Zeman’s bottom of the table strugglers this Sunday, they will have 11 points (the exact total they had after five games last season). Underperforming players giving a much better level of performance (Instead of Alvarez it’s Osvaldo), a defence which seems to have been reinforced (replace Campagnaro with Vidic) and an injured hero’s return helping expectations rise (Replace Milito with Palacio). The team is scoring goals and not conceding very often, the very same characteristics it displayed though the first five outings in the 2013/14 Serie A campaign. So whilst Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that Inter are the only side capable of challenging Roma and Juventus, this is a time to urge a wait and see attitude.

There are some notable additions to Mazzarri’s 2014/15 Inter to speculate that they are capable of a sustained run at third place but as of now we have to keep last seasons collapse in mind. Gary Medel and Yann M’Vila will certainly help, as will the goal scoring exploits of Croatian superstar Mateo Kovacic. If Hernanes can find his form after yesterday’s cameo performance Mazzarri will have a bevy of midfield options. The depth up front is worrying and Inter won’t want to lose Mauro Icardi for as many games as last season. On top of this the team needs to find its best winger. On the left there is no argument: Dodo is first choice. That leaves Jonathan, D’Ambrosio and the inconsistent Nagatomo to fight it out for one spot on the right flank.

Add to this the wildcard of how Fredy Guarin can be used on a regular basis and there are still far more questions than answers as we approach the meaty portion of Inter’s fixture list.
