“We lost the first two games but we have grown quickly. I’m impressed by the hospitality of the guys. We are taking the right steps.” Roberto Mancini spoke to Corriere della Sera in a long and interesting interview. “I’m here because I think that Inter can return what it was. I’m here to change things. Thinking about the third place bothers me a bit: next year we will fight for the championship.”
The bitter cold between you and Moratti over?
“No, there was no cold. I left after winning, Moratti continued to win: we were all enjoying it. Every Christmas I have talked to him to wish him well. Inter has two presidents: he calls me like before. Only Paul Mantovani loved players more than him.”
The real boss, however, is Thohir.
“I met him once, and he made a good impression: practical, quick. Closer to the owners of the English teams than our Italian presidents. But it helps a lot.”
What does your family think?
“Dad told me: go now! He was afraid I would end up who knows where… And my son recommended me to buy the players.”
Which was more beautiful: the first or second debut with Inter?
“In 2004 I was young: sitting on the Inter bench wasn’t easy. At 50, it’s different. The experience abroad taught me so much.”
Why has Balotelli followed you, at Inter and Manchester City?
“At Inter, with me, was a kid: he would do anything, even clean the locker rooms. At City, for two and a half years, he behaved well. With Mario it isn’t easy: what goes in one ear, comes out the other. But I have to thank him.”
Do you feel sorry that the biggest Italian footballer in history imploded?
“Very much. Mario went out with my children, and the fact that they were more or less the same age helped me to relate with him. As a boy, I want him a lot of good. He’s a good kid, one who does things by heart. I think he gives everything at Liverpool. It just depends on him. He is still young, has the strength to get up. The head? Eeeeeeeh … He must find it. After leaving City he slowed down in every aspect of the game. I was convinced that he would manage to do well at Milan, but… I have no idea of what his medicine could be, but certainly if you’re if you train him you have to pay twice: the benefits of Balotelli. He risks ending up like Adriano. For other reasons, but the same way.”
How was the idea with the pieces of paper born?
“The idea came to me in Galatasaray in Turkey, where there was the language problem: I was speaking English and they turkish. They work. They are simple and immediate. I will continue to use them.”
