Mancini’s press conference: “We have to beat Cesena”

Round 27 in Serie A, with Roberto Mancini’s Inter hosting Domenico Di Carlo’s Cesena after the loss on German soil in Volkswagen Arena against Wolfsburg. A match to win for the Nerazzurri, having collected just one point from their last two outings against Fiorentina and Napoli. Inter will face a team in need of points to avoid relegation and which currently occupies the penultimate position in the standings, together with Cagliari (20 points).

To analyze the game against Il Cavalluccio Marino, as usual, the Inter coach answered the journalists questions in Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti.

What can a defeat like the one in the Europa League bring?
“No one can be happy a result like that, even if it had been a moderate defeat, maybe 2-1, it could be. However, I am convinced that my team is able to recover the result, but now we must focus on Cesena. I repeat, we can do it against Wolfsburg.”

Is the formation a key aspect?
“It is not that important, what matters is the attitude. In Germany, at some point, I deployed the defense of three, keeping Santon on the pitch and using Shaqiri behind the attackers to cause problems for the opponent. Unfortunately we had no time to make an impact because we conceded on our error.”

Did someone disappoint you in defense? Could it be Andreolli’s turn against Cesena?
“We lost because we made mistakes that you should not make, the game was open.”

Can Carrizo play against Cesena already?
“He is a very good goalkeeper and in the first half he made two very important saves, and there were mistakes. I’m sorry for him because he had a good start, we started well and we will continue like that.”

Is this the decisive moment of the season?
“We focus on Cesena, then we’ll see.”

Are you expecting goals from Podolski?
“From the strikers I always expect goals, even from him, hoping he can do it as soon as possible, as soon as he will be used. Icardi, however, will not play thinking the yellow card, he must remain calm. Tomorrow he will be on the pitch.”

Could it be Felipe’s moment?
“He could start against the Emiliani, he will also be useful for his flexibility, being able to play either in the middle or to the left.”

Do you worry about the standings?
“Now we have to focus on the upcoming games, if we do well we will advance in the standings. The gap has remained the same.”

Is the fatigue affecting?
“The Europa League creates fatigue, especially for travel, but the players are young and can recover. Tomorrow I will evaluate.”

Is there anyone who will rest?
“Juan Jesus will not be there because of the suspension, then I will assess Medel and Palacio who are tired.”

Must Vidic give more?
“I expect more from everyone, but errors are human.”

Controlling the result is something that must improve in your opinion?
“You can concede a goal, but then it becomes all the more difficult when you concede 2-3 goals in a match. We are working on this because right now we are allowing too much. In Germany we started very well, then our mistakes changed the history of the game.”

Are the errors of individuals bigger than those of the team?
“Error as a concept and of the individual are two different things, we need to improve on everything.”

The barbecue comes at an inconvenient time?
“It was organized by time, it is something that can do well for the team. The morale was not great, but it’s a nice thing that we can do.”

Will Santon rest tomorrow?
“He could, yes. In the Premier League he played very little because of injuries, and since returning he has always played. The fact that he is claiming to be a bit tired is a normal thing.”

The couple Ranocchia-Juan Jesus does not seem tight-knit…
“They are the best pair at the moment.”

Where will you use Kovacic?
“As an offensive winger or as a playmaker. As mezzala no.”

How do you respond to Pellegrini’s comments on the future of Yaya Touré?
“We are interested in the Ivorian player, he is like a son to me. I absolutely don’t think I have said anything wrong.”

What is the goal of the team in the league? Is the third place a utopia?
“As long as there are points available we can reach third place, and let’s not forget that the teams which are before they can make mistakes at any moment. I remember that in the Premier League I recovered many points on Manchester United, although the situation today is not optimal. We will see where we will be after four games. Right now we have to do very well, starting from tomorrow’s match: we will have to beat Cesena.”
