After the draw against Cesena Inter’s hopes of reaching third are basically done but there is another avenue for them to reach the Champions League. On Thursday the Nerazzurri have an opportunity to progress into the next stage of the Europa League against Wolfsburg at the Meazza. The German club will come to Milano and try to add to their 3-1 aggregate advantage; however, Mancini still believes that Inter can overcome this deficit.
The Gazetta dello Sport has taken time to analyze the precedents for such an occurrence and points out that in November 1990, Inter won 3-0 over Aston Villa after losing 2-0 in the first leg. In 98 they did the same against Strasbourg, with goals from Ronaldo, Zanetti and Simeon. In theory this time it is less daunting as Inter have an away goal coming in to the second leg.
The real question is whether this Inter, without legendary players and a naive defence can have the sort of game necessary to overcome Wolfsburg. The numbers of tickets sold for the match do not seem to express that the fans have much faith.
