Inter great Francesco Toldo was a guest oratory of the Rondinella in Sesto San Giovanni and spoke on his retirement: “It was a decision made that evening [of the UCL win]. Personally I saw the withdrawal as a liberation, but there are other players that when you turn the lights of fame off they no longer know what to do. For some the withdrawal is difficult, for me it was nice: I’m back to being a normal person.”
He also spoke on the path young Italian’s must take to the top: “Now, with the wave of foreign players who arrive in Italy, it is more difficult for a guy to emerge, but it is not impossible. First it was a lot easier to move from an oratory to the youth sector of a team that plays in a regional league or higher. For myself I never set my career on the gain: I just liked to play football and I climbed all the stages from Serie C to the national team.”
