The gaps in the Inter squad are clearly evident & it is no surprise to most fans. In light of this, La Gazzetta dello Sport had a look at two interesting options that Spalletti might have at his disposal.

“The last 180 mins of of Inter’s season in particular have told us that Inter are solid yes, but too intricate & monotonous which makes them easy to read for their opponents & we’ve seen them lacking conviction at times in the last 20 – 30 metres of the pitch. Something has to change & maybe the team needs reinventing & something different but still with the existing players that Spalletti has at his disposal. For this to take place it now seems crucial that Joao Cancelo returns to fitness as soon as possible. The 23 year old Portuguese player should be available after the next International break just in time for the Milan Derby & he could give Spalletti some different tactical options as well as more intensity, pace & physical strength.”

The idea is to play Cancelo higher up the pitch as a right winger in a 4-2-3-1 formation (a role that he occupied more recently at Valencia & he can play in but not one he prefers & a reason for him leaving in the summer ) & push Candreva in to a more central position as a Trequartista behind Icardi. “On paper it seems like a reasonable solution which could raise the physical & brilliance of the team, thanks to the “wall” of Gagliardini-Vecino just in front of the defence: with Borja Valero featuring in the so called “easier” games – underlines the Gazzetta.

There is another option of a 3 man defence in a 3-4-2-1: Handanovic in goal; D’Ambrosio, Miranda & Skriniar in defence; Cancelo & Dalbert on each wing: Gagliardini, Borja Valero dictating play in the centre: Perisic & Eder supporting Icardi. Two alternatives to this starting 11 would be Nagatomo for Dalbert & the baby Karamoh for Eder or Perisic. Karamoh has already shown us that he can be a valid alternative during a game even in the current 4-2-3-1 formation.”

Who knows, lets see….
