Santos President Modesto Roma revealed his desire to re-sign Inter’s Brazilian forward Gabriel Barbosa who has continued to struggle to crack the European game.

“I would like to re-sign him,” he said on Portuguese radio station Renascenca but he also knows that “it will be very difficult” and admitted that Gabigol is ultimately “out of our [Santos’] reach.”

The 21-year-old striker is currently on loan at Portuguese club Benfica and just like at Inter, has found playing time hard to come by. Since making a €30 million move to Inter in the summer of 2016, Gabigol, as he is otherwise known, has made just 14 appearances in all competitions combined between his time at Inter and Benfica.

Roma then shared his thoughts on Gabigol who has struggled to replicate the form that earned him his move in the first place. In 83 league games for the Brazilian club, Gabigol netted 24 goals and was rated as one of world football’s best young talents.

“I do not understand why he is not doing well, he is an exceptional player,” Roma concluded.
