Former Inter great Beppe Bergomi compared his playing days to modern day football in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I always like to make comparisons. Hamsik has scored more goals than Maradona recently but the style of game today is totally different. I think previously the game was more defensive so the job of Altobelli, Boninsegna etc was very tough but now it is more favourable for the attackers.”

Bergomi then proceeded to discuss Inter’s current striker and club captain Mauro Icardi.

“In spite of all the rules and style, I believe Icardi is a special player. Especially when he is in the penalty area. He has all the sense which an attacker needs. He knows when to attack the ball or track back. Inter have had many great strikers but I would say Icardi reminds me of Boninsegna. Mauro has a great physique and he is excellent with his head. Aldo Serena or Altobelli were totally different players to him.

“Mauro is Argentine like Diego Milito but he has different characteristics. Milito was a better dribbler but he didn’t have a strong head like Icardi. Icardi’s movements are dangerous for defenders. The crosses of Candreva, D’Ambrosio or Perisic even make him more effective. Having said that, we must remember one thing: Icardi scoring 30 goals will not guarantee Inter their 19th title.”
