Former Inter defender and current Guangzhou Evergrande boss Fabio Cannavaro revealed the reasoning behind Inter captain Mauro Icardi rejecting a move to Tianjin Quanjian – who he was then manager of – last January.

“They proposed everything and more to what Serie A could have offered him [in terms of wages]. Icardi told me no because at Inter he feels fine and wanted to stay in Milan for the project as he likes it,” he told Il Mattino.

The 2006 World Cup winner then proceeded to talk from a personal point of view where he admitted to studying current Inter manager Luciano Spalletti a lot.

“Luciano Spalletti is a coach I have studied. He has a characteristic wherein he allows his players more freedom than his colleagues. He does not have fixed ideas or formations and the first instructions are a base to build from and then a lot it depends on the talent of the men who go on to the pitch.”
