Antonio Candreva: “Sorry For Our Fans, If Joao Mario Had Scored We Would Have Won”

Inter winger Antonio Candreva had the following to say about last night’s tough loss against AC Milan in the TIM Cup when speaking with RAI Sport after the match.

The former Lazio winger began by trying to explain what happened when the Nerazzurri crashed out of the Coppa Italia after a poor performance: “this loss is tough to digest because we wanted to do well in the Coppa Italia. Maybe a surprising loss since we come from two straight losses in the league. Now we have to restart with a lot of confidence, starting from tomorrow, we focus on the game against Lazio. Again, I am sorry for the loss since we hold this competition in high regard. Last year was last year, I think that during these last couple of months we have put that period to bed. We have to think about what is going on right now and what is to come in the future, it was inevitable to face some speed bumps after the great start to the Serie A. We just have to continue to work hard, make sacrifices and continue to be humble.”

What about the few goals scored by the midfielders?

“When you loose, you start talking about a lot of things, goals and assists. We just have to continue to work hard, being ourselves, restart in order to be at the level we were at not too long ago. Against Udinese we underperformed for one half, against Sassuolo the game was decided by certain episodes of the game. We just want to continue.”

Were Inter’s problems being hidden by Icardi and Perisic?

“When we loose it is the fault of everyone, maybe we are not as compact as before and we suffer a lot on counter attacks. We are not as dangerous as before in the attack, but that is thanks to everyone.”

Then Candreva moved on to the mixed zone where he spoke with FcInterNews and continued analyzing why Inter suffered their third consecutive loss across all competitions: “This is a tough loss that hurts, as much for the fans as it does for us. We know that we have to get our act together because come Saturday we have Lazio as our opponents and this will be a tough game where we have to give everything that we have in order to remain in the race for the Scudetto and above all the Champions League spot.

In conclusion Candreva was asked about the missed chances before replying to a question regarding the team’s morale: “If Joao Mario would have scored on the chance he got, we would have won the game. Then there is always room for improvement. Tonight morale is low, because we lost a derby that meant that we are eliminated from the Coppa Italia.”
