Penarol defender Guillermo Varela has spoken out on the recent rumours linking him with a move to Inter this transfer window, sharing a desire to remain with the Montevideo club.

The 24-year-old’s name was first linked to the Nerazzurri yesterday but he has been very quick to fire down the reports.

“My idea is to stay at Penarol, I want to think only of Penarol. We have a group with all the credentials to win the Copa Libertadores, if we continue to work as we have done so far, we have a chance to do just that,” the Uruguayan told Radio1010.

Varela, who returned to his boyhood club last summer is perhaps better known by European fans for spells with Premier League outfit Manchester United and Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.

The right back failed to live up to expectations in Europe first time round but since returning to his homeland has found form and is now being tipped with being called up for the Uruguay squad for this summer’s World Cup.
