Despite courting him for well over a year, Inter are understood to have now cooled their interest in Cittadella defender Marco Varnier according to a report from FCInterNews.it.

The highly rated 19-year-old, who can play on either side as a central defender, has also attracted interest from Serie A sides Genoa, Sassuolo, Bologna and Napoli according to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport on Varnier.

Varnier has been near ever present for the Serie B outfit this term and has close to half a century of appearances for Citta’s first team in total despite his tender age.

The Nerazzurri have decided to relinquish their interest in the Italian youth international due to the simple fact that they deem Alessandro Bastoni as the future of the defence instead. Bastoni was signed in the summer from Atalanta before being loaned back and very nearly made an early return in January as Inter endured an injury crisis in defence.
